| Owner Trained Dogs |
Lately, there has been an influx of calls to Mutts With A Mission
about Service Members wanting their own dogs trained as Service
Dogs. We can and will help with this, HOWEVER the dog must pass
our temperament test and standards to enter training with us, either
years old if they do not have prior solid obedience training. We will
accept dogs up to 3 years old if they have solid basic obedience and
NO behavior problems. If a dog cannot pass our temperament test
then they are not suitable for training with our program. We carefully
screen dogs in order to make sure they are sound physically and
mentally, this is not only for their safety, but also for the safety of
the public and handler. Not all dogs are capable of handling the stress
and requirements placed upon them as Service Dogs.
After completion of training, the dogs, like the dogs we train, must be
able to pass the Public Access Test and perform their assigned tasks
to standard. If they are not able to do this, and have been trained
remotely, we will give the option for them to come to us for training.
Please understand that we will NOT compromise our high standards
and will expect owner trained dogs to meet the same standards our
dogs do.
If you prefer to send the dog to our facility for training there will be
a cost incurred with this which we will discuss with before you sign a
contract with us for training. If you train your dog remotely and send
it to us for task training and certification there will also be a fee.
